Dear Saints,
There are many good people who just live together as though they are married. So, the answer to this question depends somewhat on what is meant by “living together”.
If it means having sexual relations, it is definitely wrong. Premarital sex is repeatedly condemned in Scripture, along with all other forms of sexual immorality. To the believing Gentiles, Paul wrote:
Acts 15:20
But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
These believers were told to abstain from among other things, fornication. Further on concerning fornication, Paul wrote;
Romans 1:29
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers…
It is clear that fornication is considered un-righteous just like wickedness, envy, murder, deceit (lying), backbiting… and so forth. Living together, even if one sleeps on the floor is not right. In Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he noted that the Corinthians were doing things that even gentiles could not do.
1 Corinthians 5:1
It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.
Paul also said to the Corinthians that “the body is not for fornication”.
1 Corinthians 6:13
Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
If this is the kind of “living together”, it is not acceptable before God, it is sinful. The Bible promotes complete abstinence outside of (and before) marriage. Sex before marriage is just as wrong as adultery and other forms of sexual immorality, because they all involve having sex with someone you are not married to.
