Above all Things

3 John 1:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

Dear Saints,

In the above scripture, John who referred to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved writes to Gaius a “beloved brother” who apparently is going through some challenges. Although this letter looks like a personal letter to Gaius, the spirit of it is to the whole church. What the disciple wishes for the part, wishes for all. The phrase “above all things” stands out conspicuously in distinguishing things that are a priority and those which are not.

Some people prosper greatly in the soul but live in poverty and poor health. This should not be. The “elder” (presbuteros) tells Gaius what he wishes for him, above everything else. This is in comparison to one thing that is, and continues to prosper without question; the soul. “As your soul prospers.” He says: I wish (pray) above all things that you may prosper and be in health “as” ……implying, the same progressive prosperity in your soul should also be in all you do.

He says, as you do well with the soul, so should you in other things. But above all, do better in prosperity and be in good health to enjoy your prosperity. (My paraphrase). Above all, prosper and be in health.

Next week for more. I call you blessed.
