2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Dear Saints,

This week I want us to look at a very important subject on how to study the Bible. As you know, the Bible is God’s letter to us. It is what reveals God to us. If we want to know Who He is, what He can do, what He has, what He does, and whom we are to Him, then we must study “His letters to us”. People read all kinds of books, magazines, documentaries and so forth but pay little attention to the most important book on earth. For this reason, I want to give you a few tips on how to study the Word of God.

The Bible is a spiritual book written over a span of many years and yet the harmony and rhythm is amazing. In studying the Bible then, the first thing to do is to pray and ask God to help you understand the meaning and application of the passages you are going to read. Have a paper and a pen ready and take brief notes on what you read.

Never be in hurry. Read slowly and ask yourself what the passage means, then re-read it again. Find the true meaning of the chapter or passage by asking yourself: Who is speaking? And to whom? Keep in mind that the Bible is written to three groups of people. Everything in the Bible addresses one of these groups, they are:

  • The Jews,
  • The Gentiles (all non-Jews) and
  • The church.

What is the main subject? What’s the speaker talking about? Identify the key verse. Find out, what does the passage say about the lord? Does the passage identify a sin or behavior that needs to be confessed or forsaken? Is there a command to be obeyed? Is there a promise that you can claim?

Are there some instructions for you to follow? Also, ask yourself questions and write them down in your Bible notebook. Use the “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, “why”, and “how” formula for your studies. For instance, “Who was there?”, “What was happening?”, “Where is this happening?”, “How did it turn out?”. This simple formula will make the story make sense. We will look at other Bible study helps in your SPREADING THE LIGHT BULLETIN next Sunday, don’t miss it. You are blessed.
